New GT Controls FAT Scope

Your new gas turbine generator will arrive with a control system that was built and programmed in a factory far from your site. If faults in the logic, trip matrix or communications are not found there, you will find them during commissioning, with cranes demobilised, a tight energisation date and your team waiting.

A weak factory acceptance test pushes problems into the field, where every fix costs more and takes longer. You risk delay to first fire, trips during early running and a commissioning team stuck debugging code instead of proving the plant.

USP&E Helps You Scope Controls FAT Before Your Turbine Ships

We understand that the factory test is your last easy chance to find a problem. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers specify, witness, install and operate new turbine packages, so we know which control checks belong in the factory and which can wait for site. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Write the FAT Scope Before the Factory Does

List every control, protection and HMI check that must pass before shipment. Include start and stop sequences, fuel valve logic, protection trips, alarms, governor and AVR interfaces, and the full list of signals to your plant control and SCADA systems.

Ask for the test procedure well before the FAT date and mark it up. A procedure written only by the supplier will test what the supplier is confident about. Your markup should add the conditions you worry about: failed sensors, lost communications, power dips on the control supply and trips during transfer.

Agree pass and fail criteria in writing. A test without criteria becomes an argument on the factory floor.

Witness the Logic, Trips and Links

Send people who will be on site later, not only a document reviewer. Witness the trip matrix by forcing each trip input and checking the outcome, alarm text and event record. Check that each communication link carries the right signals with the right scaling and timing.

Simulate the faults that hurt most in the field: a failed speed probe, a stuck fuel valve feedback, loss of a redundant controller and loss of a network switch. Your controls should respond the way the documentation says, and the HMI should tell the operator clearly what happened.

Reject incomplete FAT packs that lack dated signals, serial numbers matched to the hardware and an honest punch list. If a check cannot be done in the factory, record why and where it will be done instead.

Cover Rework Delays and Plan the Next Block

FAT rework can slip delivery. Plan cover so your energisation date does not depend on the factory: verified used/new gas turbines or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B can carry early load, and natural gas engines/stations can support auxiliaries.

Hand all FAT evidence into site commissioning and O&M without gaps, so site tests start from the factory results rather than repeating them blindly.

If your site will grow into data-centre or compute load, use the same FAT standard for every block. AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, can then be accepted the same way under one hyperscale EPC/O&M team.

Local Teams Near Your New Gas Turbine Site

Data-centre schedules are won or lost in permitting, gas supply and interconnection, so USP&E puts its US offices first. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) give you two US bases for engineering reviews, procurement follow-up and site visits, and both teams work your new GT fuel gas specification alongside you rather than from a sales desk.

Behind them, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles structuring, bonding and finance; Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) owns engineering and project controls for new gas turbine generators, fuel gas skids and bridge packages; Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports design and commissioning; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) manages China manufacturing and supply-chain follow-up.

For controls FAT on new turbine packages, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers can mark up procedures and witness trips, while Wuxi supports factory visits for China-built control cabinets. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That network stands behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, run under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems.

Proof from Recent New Gas Turbine Projects

You want proof that USP&E has accepted, installed and run new turbine packages for demanding US developers. These projects show it.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.

HowTo: Scope New GT Controls FAT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the supplier FAT procedure, I/O list and control drawings under NDA. 2. Receive a marked-up scope, pass criteria and witness plan. 3. Witness, close punch items and hand evidence into commissioning.

  1. List every control, protection and HMI check that must pass before shipment.
  2. Witness logic, trip matrices and communication links on the FAT floor.
  3. Reject incomplete FAT packs that lack dated signals, serial matches and punch lists.
  4. Plan cover with used/new gas turbines or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B if FAT rework slips delivery.
  5. Leave room for later blocks such as New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.
  6. Hand FAT evidence into site commissioning and O&M without gaps.

FAQ: New GT Controls FAT Scope

What should a gas turbine controls FAT cover?

USP&E includes start and stop sequences, fuel valve logic, protection trips, alarms, governor and AVR interfaces, and every signal to your plant control and SCADA systems. Each check needs written pass criteria, so your witness team can decide on the factory floor.

Why should you mark up the supplier’s FAT procedure?

USP&E marks up procedures because a supplier tends to test what it is confident about. Your markup adds failed sensors, lost communications, control supply dips and trips during transfer. Those are the conditions most likely to cause trouble during commissioning.

Who should witness the controls FAT?

USP&E sends engineers who will be on site later, not only document reviewers. They force each trip, check alarm text and event records, and verify communication links. That knowledge then travels with the equipment and saves your commissioning team days.

When should a FAT pack be rejected?

USP&E rejects packs without dated signals, serial numbers matched to the hardware and an honest punch list. Checks that cannot be done in the factory must be recorded with a reason and a site test. Gaps left unexplained usually reappear on your site.

Where are USP&E’s offices for new turbine FAT work?

USP&E leads new turbine FAT work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US projects and supplier factories. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add field O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered new and refurbished turbines for US developers before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include NEOM and other large projects with accountable EPC and O&M. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbine generators?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that witnesses your FAT also commissions and runs the machine. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond to a FAT scope request?

USP&E can start reviewing your supplier procedure, I/O list and control drawings as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers mark up the highest-risk gaps first, so the scope is ready before the FAT date, with timing set by document quality.

Find Control Problems in the Factory, Not on Site

Get controls FAT right and your turbine arrives with proven logic, clear evidence and a short punch list. Get it wrong and your commissioning team spends weeks chasing faults the factory could have found. USP&E will help you scope, witness and hand over with confidence.
