New Gas Turbine Generators

New GT Performance Test Scope

Your new gas turbine generators come with guaranteed output and fuel consumption. Those guarantees only protect you if a performance test proves them, and a test run with uncalibrated instruments, a loose fuel sample or a disputed correction curve can leave you with no remedy for a shortfall.

You cannot reopen a guarantee after handover. If the test scope is vague, you are carrying lost output, higher fuel cost and dispute risk for the life of the unit.

USP&E Helps You Scope a New GT Performance Test

We know performance testing often gets squeezed between late commissioning and an urgent handover date. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers write test scopes, calibrate instruments and agree correction methods so new turbine guarantees are proven before handover. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

A good test is agreed long before it is run. The contract, the instruments and the method should all be settled while there is still time to fix any of them.

Write the Test Into the Contract

Name the test standard, the guaranteed values and the correction curves in the contract. A recognised code such as ASME PTC 22 gives both sides a shared method, and the correction curves should be attached rather than promised later.

Define what counts as a pass, what tolerance applies and what happens after a shortfall. Liquidated damages, remedial work or a retest each need clear terms.

Agree who witnesses the test and who signs the result. Your team, the supplier and any lender’s engineer should know their role in advance. If you do not have in-house test experience, appoint an independent test engineer early so your side of the table is as prepared as the supplier’s.

Calibrate Instruments and Agree the Method

Install and calibrate test instruments before the test window opens. Fuel flow, fuel composition, power output, ambient temperature, pressure and humidity all affect the result.

Agree fuel sampling, test duration and stability criteria with every party. A sample taken at the wrong point or a test started before the unit is stable can be challenged later.

Check that your gas turbine generators are clean and in handover condition. A fouled compressor or a temporary filter left in place will skew the result in either direction.

Run, Review and Hand Over a Baseline

Run the test, review raw data together and settle any shortfall before handover. Do not accept a summary sheet without the readings behind it. Your copy of the raw data is also what lets your O&M team compare future performance against a trusted starting point.

Keep cover available if the test slips. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry load, and natural gas engines/stations can support the site while issues are fixed.

Hand test reports and baseline values into O&M for future trending. The same discipline applies to AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is commissioned by a hyperscale EPC/O&M team that treats the test as the start of performance tracking.

Where USP&E Supports Your New Gas Turbine Project

If your new GT fuel gas specification is in the United States, your first conversations run through USP&E’s US offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700). They keep you close to developers, utilities, gas suppliers and US equipment sources, and they can walk your site before anything ships.

Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) runs engineering, protection studies and project controls for new gas turbine generators, fuel gas skids and bridge packages, and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) adds design and commissioning support. London (162-168 Regent Street) structures the contract, insurance and financing file your lenders will read, while Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) follows up China supply chain and manufacturing.

For new GT performance test scopes, Colorado Springs and Knoxville test engineers can review your contract terms and instrument list before the test window is booked. Proof from Recent New Gas Turbine Projects

You want proof that USP&E has commissioned and tested turbine power for demanding US developers. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • Perenco, Guatemala: USP&E delivered a 13.1 MW HFO/diesel modular power station under full EPC in under five months, on time and on budget. Read the case study.

HowTo: Scope a New GT Performance Test

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share the contract, guarantees and instrument list under NDA. 2. Receive a test scope with method and witness plan. 3. Run the test, then trend the baseline under accountable O&M.

  1. Write the test standard, guaranteed values and correction curves into the contract.
  2. Install and calibrate test instruments before the test window opens.
  3. Agree fuel sampling, ambient correction and test duration with every party.
  4. Run the test, review raw data and settle any shortfall before handover.
  5. Leave pad space for later blocks such as the new FX-45 and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.
  6. Hand test reports and baseline values into O&M for future trending.

FAQ: New GT Performance Test Scope

Why does a performance test matter on a new turbine?

USP&E sees guarantees for output and fuel consumption lose their value when the performance test is vague or poorly run. Your test is the only proof that the unit meets the contract. Without it, a shortfall becomes your cost for the life of the machine.

Which test standard should you use?

USP&E recommends naming a recognised code such as ASME PTC 22 in the contract, with correction curves attached. You and the supplier then share one method and one set of corrections. A test without an agreed code invites disputes over every reading and correction your team makes.

What instruments must be calibrated before the test?

USP&E checks calibration on fuel flow, fuel composition, power output, ambient temperature, pressure and humidity instruments before the window opens. You keep certificates on file and check them again on test day. One uncalibrated meter can be enough to challenge your entire test result and delay your handover.

What happens if the turbine falls short?

USP&E advises writing clear shortfall terms into the contract, such as liquidated damages, remedial work or a retest. You settle any shortfall before handover. Once the unit is accepted, recovering lost output or fuel cost from the supplier becomes much harder for your team.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support this work?

USP&E leads new GT performance tests work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, where test and commissioning engineers sit close to your unit. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add field O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China supply chain and manufacturing. Every office works from the same project file.

Has USP&E delivered power projects like this before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover Barrick, Resolute and Kinross, where accountable EPC and O&M kept critical power online. You can read each case study and judge the evidence yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for this equipment?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the team that scopes your test stays accountable when the unit runs. You deal with one accountable team from first review to O&M.

How fast can USP&E respond on this topic?

USP&E can start reviewing your contract, guarantees and instrument list as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag weak terms first, then issue the full test scope, with timing set by data quality and access to the site and supplier.

Prove Your Turbine Guarantees Before Handover

Get the performance test right and your guarantees are proven with data both sides accept. Get it wrong and the first sign is a shortfall you cannot recover. USP&E will help you scope, calibrate and test with confidence.
