New Gas Turbine Generators

New GT Step-Up Transformer Scope

Your new gas turbine generator cannot export a single megawatt without its step-up transformer. That transformer must match the generator output, the grid voltage, the fault level and the site conditions, and it is often one of the longest-lead items in the whole project.

Scope it late or loosely and you risk the wrong impedance, a tap range that cannot hold voltage, missing protection interfaces or a unit that cannot be moved to site. Any of those can delay energisation for months, cost you revenue and leave a finished turbine waiting for a connection.

USP&E Helps You Scope the New GT Step-Up Transformer

We know the step-up transformer often sits between the turbine package, the switchyard and the grid connection, with no one fully in charge of it. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers scope generator step-up transformers for new turbine packages, from grid data and impedance to cooling, protection, testing and transport. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

The goal is a transformer that fits your generator, your grid and your site, ordered early enough, tested properly and delivered with a clear route to its foundation.

Confirm the Electrical Basis

Start with the electrical basis: generator rated output and voltage, grid connection voltage, the connection arrangement and whether auxiliaries will be supplied from the step-up transformer or a separate unit. Agree the vector group with your electrical designer and the grid operator.

Allow for how the unit will really run. Output varies with ambient temperature, so check the transformer rating against the generator’s best output on a cold day and the cooling capacity on a hot one.

Decide early whether you need a generator circuit breaker, because the answer affects how the transformer is energised and protected.

Fix Impedance, Taps and Site Limits

Get grid and fault data from the grid operator before fixing impedance and tap range. Impedance affects fault levels on both sides and how well the plant can support grid voltage, while the tap range must cover the grid voltage band you will actually see.

Decide between on-load and off-circuit tap changers with care. An on-load tap changer helps hold voltage as grid conditions change but adds maintenance; an off-circuit changer is simpler but less flexible.

Define site limits: cooling type, ambient range, noise limits, oil containment and fire separation, and the space available. Transformers need bunds, fire walls or spacing, and access for future maintenance.

Specify Interfaces, Tests and Transport

Specify protection, monitoring and control interfaces: differential and restricted earth fault protection, temperature and gas monitoring, tap changer control and alarms back to your turbine control system. Make sure signal lists match on both sides.

Agree factory tests, transport and site tests before you order. Large transformers may need special transport, route surveys or partial disassembly. Site tests after installation confirm nothing was damaged on the way.

Transformer scope is just as vital on the largest blocks. Teams delivering hyperscale EPC/O&M scope step-up transformers early for AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is planned with the same early transformer work. Your gas turbine generators, and any bridge units such as a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations, need that clarity too.

USP&E Track Record for New Gas Turbine

You want proof that USP&E has delivered and connected new gas turbine packages to the grid. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.

HowTo: Scope the New GT Step-Up Transformer

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share single-lines, grid data and package details under NDA. 2. Receive a transformer scope with ratings, interfaces and tests. 3. Order, test and connect, then maintain under accountable O&M.

  1. Confirm the generator output, grid voltage and connection arrangement the transformer must serve.
  2. Get grid and fault data from the grid operator before fixing impedance and tap range.
  3. Define cooling, noise, oil containment and space limits for the site.
  4. Specify protection, monitoring and control interfaces with the generator and switchyard.
  5. Agree factory tests, transport method and site tests before you order.
  6. Hand test reports, settings and maintenance instructions into O&M.

FAQ: New GT Step-Up Transformer Scope

Why scope the step-up transformer early?

USP&E scopes the transformer early because it is often one of the longest-lead items on a new gas turbine project. Your energisation date depends on it. Late or loose scope risks wrong ratings, missing interfaces and months of delay with a finished turbine waiting.

What grid data does the transformer depend on?

USP&E gets grid voltage range, fault levels and connection requirements from the grid operator. You need this before fixing impedance and tap range. Without it, the transformer may not hold voltage or may push fault levels beyond what your switchgear can handle.

Should the transformer have an on-load tap changer?

USP&E weighs grid voltage variation against maintenance. An on-load tap changer helps your plant hold voltage as grid conditions change but needs more upkeep. An off-circuit changer is simpler but only adjusts with the transformer de-energised, which suits more stable grids.

What site limits affect transformer design?

USP&E defines cooling type, ambient range, noise limits, oil containment, fire separation and access for maintenance. Your site layout must allow bunds, fire walls or spacing. Transport routes can also limit size and weight, so survey them before you order.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support new GT packages?

USP&E leads new turbine package work from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US suppliers and grid connections. London handles contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add EPC and O&M depth, and Wuxi supports China manufacturing. Every office uses your project file.

Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also cover NEOM, where USP&E supplied zero-hour gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface. You can read each case study yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for new turbine packages?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, supplies, builds and operates power plants with its own engineers, so the team that scopes your step-up transformer also connects it, energises the unit, hands over test records and stays accountable to you for export.

How fast can USP&E respond on transformer scope?

USP&E can start reviewing your single-lines, grid data and package details as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag missing grid data and interface gaps first, then issue the transformer scope, with timing set by data quality and order dates.

Connect Your New Turbine Without Delay

Get transformer scope right and your new unit energises on time and exports as designed. Get it wrong and the first sign is a finished turbine waiting months for its connection. USP&E will help you scope, test and connect with confidence.
