50 Hz vs 60 Hz New Gas Turbine Generator Packages — Spec Before You Ship

Frequency is not a preference setting on OEM-class gas turbine generators. New 50 Hz and 60 Hz packages are different machines for protection, synchronising, and grid code — decide early or pay twice.

What changes between 50 Hz and 60 Hz new packages

  • Generator and speed architecture — pole/speed combinations and nameplate language differ; do not assume a 60 Hz unit can be “retagged” for 50 Hz service without engineering proof.
  • Protection and synchronising — under/over frequency, ROCOF where applicable, sync check, and islanding schemes track grid frequency.
  • Auxiliaries and motors — BOP motors, fans, and pumps are often frequency-specific; mismatched auxiliaries create silent schedule killers.
  • Grid code and offtaker rules — utilities and hyperscale campuses write frequency into interconnection agreements before turbines ship.
  • Spare strategy — mixed-frequency fleets double critical spares and training load.

Specification checklist before SEARCH INVENTORY

  1. Grid or island frequency: 50 Hz or 60 Hz — locked in writing.
  2. Voltage and grounding philosophy for the switchgear bus.
  3. Prime vs peaking vs bridge duty and expected annual hours.
  4. Fuel letters and contingency fuel path.
  5. Parallel intent: single unit, multi-unit island, or utility sync.
  6. Export packaging and transport envelope for frontier sites.

New packages, new-surplus, and FX-45 frequency posture

Factory-new OEM packages can often be ordered for either frequency when the queue allows. New-surplus OEM-class units must be verified as built — documentation beats sales claims. No heat-rate, CapEx, combined-cycle MW totals, or emissions inventions. Platform page: /fx-45/ · expand: FX-45 modular new platform.

Data-centre and AI campus programmes that phase blocks across regions should standardise frequency strategy early — see data centres. Mixed 50/60 Hz campuses require separate islands and careful commercial boundaries.

EPC consequences of a late frequency change

Changing frequency after civil pads are poured and transformers are ordered is not a paperwork edit. Protection studies, generator selection, motor lists, and sometimes entire BOP packages reset. USP&E’s eight PM disciplines (scope, risk, stakeholder, cost, resource, time, quality, procurement) treat frequency as a freeze gate. Extreme Ownership means saying no to late “can we convert it?” requests when physics and grid code say no.

Procurement language that prevents Hz disputes

Where engineering studies exist for a specific serial, they belong under NDA — never as website promises. Contact for clarification: contact us · +27 10 822 2324 · info@uspeglobal.com.

Common questions

Can one new GT genset serve both 50 and 60 Hz?

Do not assume dual-frequency capability. Specify the service frequency and verify the build. Marketing claims without documentation are not engineering.

Does inventory list frequency?

Serious buyers confirm frequency on each candidate listing and in the technical pack. Start at the inventory hub and GT category pages on uspeglobal.com.

How does frequency interact with lead times?

Wrong or undecided frequency extends OEM engineering and can eliminate inventory candidates. See procurement lead times.
