Specify the generator loosely and the risks follow you for decades. An MVA rating that is too small caps output on cold days when the turbine could give more. A narrow power factor range fails the grid code. The wrong voltage forces an extra transformer. The result is lost output, failed compliance tests, delay to commercial operation and costly changes after delivery.
USP&E Helps You Match the Generator to the Turbine and the Grid
We know you want every megawatt the turbine can give, delivered within the grid rules. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers specify, supply, install and run gas turbine generators. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to design the generator yourself. You need clear requirements for rating, power factor, reactive capability, voltage and cooling, written into the purchase specification before quotes come in.
Start with the Grid Code and Site Rules
Collect the grid code or site connection rules first. They set the power factor range, reactive power the unit must supply or absorb, voltage range, fault ride-through and frequency limits. A generator that cannot meet them will fail compliance tests, however good the turbine is.
Set the power factor range the generator must support at full output, both lagging and leading. A wider range means a larger generator for the same real power, so do not ask for more than the rules and your network need. Check whether the plant must supply reactive power to support local voltage, for example at the end of a weak line or on a campus with large motor loads.
Check the turbine’s best output across your site’s temperature range. Gas turbines make more power on cold days. If the generator is rated only for the output on a hot day, it may cap the turbine when conditions are best. The LM2500 and LM6000 aeroderivative overview shows how output varies by model and conditions.
Specify Rating, Voltage, Cooling and Duty
Specify the MVA rating so it covers the turbine’s maximum real power at the required power factor across your site conditions, with sensible margin. Ask for the generator capability curve with each quote, showing real and reactive power limits at different cooling conditions, and check it against the grid code requirements.
Choose the generator voltage with your electrical designer. It affects cable sizes, switchgear, the generator step-up transformer and fault levels. Specify the cooling method suited to the rating and the site, and check that cooling performance holds in your hottest and dustiest conditions.
Specify short-circuit duty, excitation system type and performance, neutral earthing and protection interfaces. These affect how the generator behaves in faults and how it is protected. Compare turbine packages in USP&E stock against the same requirements, since an existing package’s generator must meet your rules too.
Write It into the Specification and Check Every Quote
Write all generator requirements into the purchase specification: rating, power factor range, reactive capability, voltage, cooling, short-circuit duty, excitation, earthing, protection interfaces, tests and documents. Ask every supplier to state compliance line by line and to provide the capability curve and test plan.
Check reactive capability at hot and cold ambient conditions, not only at the rating point. Witness key factory tests where you can, and plan site tests that prove grid code compliance before commercial operation. Our sister site covers new gas turbine purchase scope in more detail.
The same care applies to every unit, whether gas turbine generators for a utility, used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or natural gas engines/stations. On data centre campuses under hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute must meet campus and grid rules alike, as will the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA.
Global Offices Behind Your New Gas Turbine Programme
Your team wants answers in its own time zone. USP&E’s offices in Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) lead your new GT fuel gas specification conversations in the US, from the first data request to the site visit, so questions about fuel, interconnection and delivery are answered by people who can be on site.
The wider network carries the heavy lifting for new gas turbine generators, fuel gas skids and bridge packages: London (162-168 Regent Street) for structuring and finance, Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) for engineering and project controls, Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) for design and commissioning support, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) for China supply chain and manufacturing.
For new turbine generator specifications, Colorado Springs and Knoxville engineers check grid code needs for US projects, and London supports the purchase contracts that carry them. FAQ: New GT Generator MVA and Power Factor Scope
Why does the generator rating matter on a new gas turbine?
USP&E stresses it because the generator decides how much turbine power reaches the grid. An MVA rating that is too small caps output on cold days when the turbine could give more. The rating must cover maximum real power at the required power factor across site conditions.
What power factor range should a gas turbine generator support?
USP&E sets the range from the grid code or site rules, both lagging and leading at full output. A wider range needs a larger generator for the same real power, so ask for what the rules and your network need, not more.
What is a generator capability curve?
USP&E describes it as a chart showing the real and reactive power a generator can deliver at different cooling conditions. Ask for it with every quote and check it against the grid code, because it shows whether the unit can meet reactive power needs in your conditions.
How is generator voltage chosen for a new gas turbine?
USP&E chooses voltage with the electrical designer, because it affects cable sizes, switchgear, the step-up transformer and fault levels. The right voltage avoids extra transformers, keeps cable runs practical and holds fault levels within what your switchgear can safely handle.
Where are USP&E’s offices for new gas turbine projects?
USP&E supports US gas turbine projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, with engineers in US time zones. London supports purchase contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering depth, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China for your plant.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine units before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines for NEOM and a modular power station for Perenco in Guatemala.
Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E specifies, supplies, installs and runs gas turbine units with its own engineers, so the team that writes your generator requirements is the same team that tests and commissions the unit against them on your site.
How fast can USP&E draft generator requirements?
USP&E can start as soon as you share the grid code, site conditions and your turbine choice. Engineers set the rating, power factor and reactive needs first, so your specification is complete and ready before any supplier is asked to quote.
