New Gas Turbine Generators

New GT DC Battery System Scope

Your new gas turbine depends on a system most people never see: the DC batteries. They power the controls, protection relays, breaker trip coils, emergency lube oil pumps and often the starting sequence. When the AC supply fails, they are what lets the unit shut down safely or start again.

If the battery system is undersized, poorly charged or never tested, a grid loss can leave breakers unable to trip, controls without power or an emergency lube pump that stops while the rotor is still turning. That means a failed start, damaged bearings, a long outage and a costly repair at the worst possible moment.

USP&E Helps You Scope a DC System You Can Trust

We know that small systems can cause big failures. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers design, build and maintain gas turbine plant with every auxiliary system scoped and tested. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to guess the battery size. You need a clear list of DC loads, a duty cycle that covers the worst case, sizing with sensible margins and a test plan that proves the system works.

List Every DC Load and Its Duty

List every load the DC system must carry: control systems, protection relays, breaker closing and trip coils, emergency lube oil and seal oil pumps, emergency lighting, fire and gas panels and any starting loads. Get the current and duration for each from the equipment suppliers.

Build a duty cycle for the worst case, usually a total loss of AC power. Some loads run continuously, some for minutes and some for a few seconds when breakers trip. The emergency lube pump must run until the rotor stops and cools enough, which can be the largest load on the system.

Check whether large packages such as an LM2500 or LM6000 aeroderivative unit need their own DC system or share one with the plant. Shared systems need careful protection so a fault in one place does not take everything down.

Size Batteries, Chargers and Rooms

Size the battery for the duty cycle with margins for temperature, ageing and design growth, following the sizing method in the standard you work to. Choose the battery type with your site in mind: temperature, maintenance access and expected life all matter.

Size chargers to carry normal DC load while recharging the battery within a set time after a discharge. Consider redundant chargers or a second battery for critical plant, so one failure does not leave the turbine unprotected.

Design the battery room or cabinet with ventilation, temperature control, spill containment where needed and safe access. Batteries that run hot die young. These details belong in your natural gas turbine power plant design from the start.

Test at Commissioning and Through Operation

Test the DC system at commissioning with a discharge test against the duty cycle and a full AC loss test on the turbine. Prove that breakers trip, controls stay alive and the emergency lube pump runs until the rotor stops.

Keep testing in operation: regular checks of voltage, charger alarms and battery condition, with periodic capacity tests. Replace batteries before capacity falls too far, not after a failed start. Units in our turbine stock are checked the same way before dispatch.

Every type of gas turbine generators needs this care: a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, described on our FX-45 page. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute rely on DC systems that work every time. FAQ: New GT DC Battery System Scope

What does a gas turbine DC battery system power?

USP&E designs DC systems that power controls, protection relays, breaker trip and closing coils, emergency lube and seal oil pumps, emergency lighting and fire and gas panels. When AC power fails, the batteries let the turbine shut down safely and protect its bearings while the rotor slows.

How is a turbine battery sized?

USP&E sizes batteries from a full list of DC loads and a worst-case duty cycle, usually a total loss of AC power. Margins are added for temperature, ageing and design growth. The emergency lube pump running until the rotor stops is often the largest demand.

Why does the emergency lube pump matter so much?

USP&E treats the emergency lube pump as critical because the rotor keeps turning after a trip. Without oil, bearings can be damaged within minutes. The DC system must run the pump long enough for the rotor to stop and cool, even during a total loss of AC power.

How often should turbine batteries be tested?

USP&E checks voltage, charger alarms and battery condition regularly, with periodic capacity tests set by the battery maker’s guidance and the standard used. A discharge test at commissioning sets the baseline. Batteries are replaced before capacity falls too far to protect the turbine.

Where are USP&E’s offices for new gas turbine projects?

USP&E supports new gas turbine projects from Colorado Springs and Knoxville in the US. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and field depth across Africa, and Wuxi follows up batteries, switchgear and equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?

USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include a 13.1 MW modular power station for Perenco in Guatemala and zero-hour SGT-400 gas turbines supplied to NEOM.

Is USP&E a broker for new gas turbines?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, builds and maintains gas turbine plant with its own engineers, so the team that scopes your DC system is the same team that installs it, tests it at commissioning and answers for it in operation.

How fast can USP&E respond to a DC system review?

USP&E can start reviewing your turbine package details, single-line diagram and load data as soon as you share them. Engineers flag missing loads or undersized equipment early, so batteries and chargers can be ordered in good time without delaying commissioning or first fire.

Make Sure Your Turbine Can Always Stop Safely

Scope the DC system well and your turbine starts, trips and stops safely every time. Get it wrong and a grid loss can cost you bearings and weeks of downtime. USP&E will help you scope, size and test with confidence.
