New Gas Turbine Generators

New GT Starting System Scope

You ordered new gas turbine generators and everyone is focused on the turbine, the generator and the fuel gas. But the first start depends on a starting system that often falls between scopes: a motor, a static starter, a diesel, a battery bank and the power to drive them.

Treat the emissions permit as a gate in your equipment package, not an errand after award. Before you sign, you should know the emission limits likely to apply, the monitoring and reporting requirements, and whether you need dispersion modelling or public consultation. Those answers shape stack height, combustion system choice and layout.

USP&E as Your Guide to a First Start That Happens on Time

Size your start source for the largest machine’s starting demand plus essential auxiliaries, with margin for cold weather and ageing. Test a full black-start sequence at commissioning, from dead station to first unit loaded, and repeat it on a schedule so you know it still works.

Let the Starting Scope Protect Your Schedule

Agree the monitoring approach early, whether continuous monitoring or periodic stack testing, and include analysers, data systems and reporting in the package scope.

Then check your interfaces. Cable sizes, breaker ratings, protection settings and control signals between the starter and the turbine package are common gaps. A one-page start-path diagram, agreed by every supplier you use, prevents most first-fire surprises and gives your commissioning lead a single reference when questions arise.

Choose Your Start Power: Grid, Black-Start Set or Storage

Your start power can come from the grid, a dedicated black-start diesel or gas engine, or battery storage. Grid start is simplest where you have a strong connection. On islanded or weak-grid sites, natural gas engines or a diesel black-start set give independence, and storage can support quick restarts.

If fire protection scope is not defined before you sign, gaps appear during design review or, worse, after an incident. That means delays while systems are added, insurer objections, permit risk and a turbine that cannot start until the fire engineering is finished.

Share Starting Assets With Frame 6B Bridges and Future Blocks

A remanufactured GE Frame 6B or used or new gas turbines used as bridge capacity may share start power with new units. Check that your starting source can handle each machine type and that sequences do not compete. Shared assets save you money only when they are sized and controlled for every machine that depends on them.

If your programme grows toward data-centre power plants, fire protection must scale with it. Reserve separation distances, firefighting access roads, water storage and hydrant mains for the final site, so new blocks do not squeeze existing units or overload the water supply.

Your path from first call to reliable power

If lube-oil scope is left vague until after award, the risk is late change orders, coolers too small for your hottest season and bearings that wear early or trip on temperature. Every surprise means delay to first power and cost that lands on your project, not the vendor.

  1. Define load duty, islanding needs, and whether the site must achieve a dead-bus start without external supply.
  2. Rank each option, from a remanufactured GE Frame 6B bridge to used or new gas turbines or natural gas engines, by the starter it carries and the start power it draws.
  3. Request records, starter inspection findings, auxiliary load lists, and controls status for candidates in USP&E live inventory.
  4. Name an owner for every failed-start alarm, purge interval, and starter maintenance task, and keep those names in a single file.
  5. Witness grid-present and dead-bus start tests before final acceptance and operator handover.

Common questions

Why does the starting system scope matter for new gas turbines?

USP&E scopes the starting system early because it often falls between suppliers. Motors, static starters, cranking engines, batteries and their power supply must all be ready before first fire, and a missing piece can delay commissioning or leave a new turbine unable to start.

What start power options exist for gas turbines?

USP&E considers grid supply, dedicated diesel or gas black-start engines and battery storage as start power sources. Grid start suits strong connections, while islanded sites usually need a black-start set, and storage can support quick restarts when sized for the largest starting demand.

How often should black-start be tested?

USP&E recommends a full black-start test at commissioning and then on a regular schedule, typically at least annually. Each test should run from a dead station to the first unit loaded, so you know batteries, engines, controls and procedures still work when needed.

Can bridge turbines share start power with new units?

USP&E allows shared start power when the source is sized for the largest machine and sequences are controlled so units never compete. Shared starting assets save space and capital only when every machine type has been checked against the source’s capability.
